Reasonably Priced
Be sure of this; that if you rise
By luck or skill or enterprise
Above the ordinary mob
And occupy a primcely job
In business, politics or art,
The gossipers will make you smart.
Your faults will all be magnified
Your virtues doubted or denied,
While various reports and rumors
Will reach the Ultimate Consumers
Who read distinctly as they run
What gossip says that you have done.
Your past, your future and your present
Will each be probed for notes unpleasant
And all your private lufe will be
Of public notoriety.
But after all, success and money,
Do help to keep the temper sunny,
And though the gossips play the vandal
You'll find the game is worth the scandal.
